Give It Away

Last night in the men’s group I often write about we had a nice lively discussion about this part of the most awesome Sermon on the Mount.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Matt 5:38-42 NIV

The leader of the discussion, focused on verse 42, and how we deal with street beggars.  A couple of us challenged him to not just use that tried and true thought, but to go bigger in this verse.  To go to a place where the Christ says, if you are attacked, hit, written about, ordered about, asked to give, etc, that you will not only oblige that but that you will willingly not seek revenge and do more than asked.

I have not been able to get this off my mind. After thinking about this overnight, I realized that when we give our selves to the Christ, it’s not a matter of ‘if’ we give to the street beggar, it becomes a natural reaction and standard.  We are called to be different, to not seek our own, to not seek revenge, to not even the score, but to change the score – in favor of others.  And I think that is the heart of this challenging bit of teaching.

It sort of reminds me of the song Follow Me by Leeland

Use my hands, use my feet
To make your kingdom come
Through the corners of the earth
Until your work is done
‘Cause Faith without works is dead
And on the cross your blood was she’d
So how could I not give it away so freely?

Change the score and give it away today, freely.

Do Something Useful

One of my coworkers passed along this “Pep Talk” video last week.  I have to admit I thought it was more of the propaganda that he was pushing at first ! :).  But really this is a good little talk from a small child, just a reminder to make sure we take advantage of what we have and make it count.

This sort of reminds me of this admonishing from long ago, as my boy Paul writes this to his dear friend Titus

14 Our people should learn to spend their time doing something useful and worthwhile. Titus 3:14 (CEV)

or from the NIV

14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.

In Christ Alone

Evidently today is Single Tasking Day, which if I practice, will make writing this blog entry a different experience for me, since I sometimes write it walking into the office, or while scanning email, or getting dressed.

But today, no, I am focused on one thing, and one thing only.

If I could just decide what it is. 🙂

As I was saying, it’s Chocolate Mint Day, er, no I mean Single Tasking Day, which reminds me of ice cream for some reason, and this verse

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 (NIV)

That might be one thing to focus on while enjoy the day called Single Tasking Day?

10 Words

I am still attempting to recover from spending the weekend in Gatlinburg with thousands of teenagers, so my brain is a little cloudy this morning.  It might be the lack of sleep, or it may be all of the new things I learn about teenagers this weekend!

Anyway, it was a great weekend, and I did learn a lot about a lot of things as I listened to several great men teach about that guy the Christos.

The thing that keeps running around my head this morning it this simple statement from the Christ while he was on this Earth.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” John 14:6 (ESV)

Those 10 words are pretty remarkable, and set this rabbi apart from all the others.

I am sure you will see some more references to that come out in the next few weeks, as I processes all I learned, but today, think about those words and if his way and your way are the same way?

Falling Blessing

It’s the end of the week, and for me I could stand to be reminded on some of the great blessings that fall from Heaven, like this one.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:6-8 (NIV)

and this one

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ, God has given us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly world. Ephesians 1:3 (NCV)

By the way, I wonder if blessings falling from heaven look like this.
