Pancake Day

w00t w00t, there are Free Pancakes at IHOP today, as it the IHOP Pancake Day! Which is odd because its a week early this year, but anyway, lets get March Madness off to a great start with “free” pancakes from IHOP ALL DAY.

What does that have to do with anything? Well giving and receiving of course. They are giving away a free short stack to each customer, hoping in return that you donate to their charity. Hm, a few sayings come to mind like ‘What goes around comes around’, ‘treat others how you want to be treated” and then this one from Luke:

38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 (New International Version, ©2010)

Yep, it’s a idea that is found is short order these days. The idea that if you give it will be given back to you. It’s definitely something I lose track of a whole lot. We are so apt to take, that we forget the true meaning. And then the best part – for with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. hm.. I think a need a need measure.

As you interact with people today give free pancakes – and see what you get in return.

The Gospel According to Ackbar

I few weeks ago, I picked up this sweet woot shirt.  Most Star Wars fans will get the reference right off.  If you are not then listen up – thats Admiral Ackbar who, when the rebel alliance is attacking the death star ( the cheese), makes the famous line that for some reason is so ridiculed.  When he realized his squadrons are in trouble he shouts out “It’s a trap!”

I have been spending a lot of time recently thinking about ol’ Ackbar, and his infamous warning.  For it seems that we find ourselves most of time in the position of the the X wing fighter pilots.  Think about those guys – heading in for what appears to be treasure and true victory.  Hey look, no defense, hey look, a helpless little Death Star just waiting for us to take it over.  Could life get any better?

Yep that’s us.  Oh what could it hurt?  Sure I need more money – look it’s just there for the taking.  One look, one touch, one taste.  Whoo hoo, we are in like Flynn!  oops…

Fortunately, we have words similar to the Admiral to remind us what is going on.  First there are the words of James crying out “Trap, Trap”

14We are tempted by our own desires that drag us off and trap us. James 1:14 (CEV)

oh those temptations.  like cheese on a mouse trap, like the Death Star without any defense.  Next we see Paul writing to Timothy, instructing him to warn people of the traps that are blinding them as he says.”It’s a trap”, the devil’s tricks and mirages are just traps! Pull up Pull Up..”

and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, 2 Timothy 2:26 (NIV)

Finally, in the theme of Ackbar are the words of the Christ himself reminding us of how careless living can lead us right into a trap.

33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Luke 21:33-35 (NIV)

So today, heed the warning of Ackbar and remember that some of the things of life may look great, but really “It’s a trap!”

Pull Up! Pull Up!

No Name Calling Week

Oh how could I forget, I am so dumb. How could all you you ‘people’ out there not remind me. It’s No Name Calling Week. Come on you bunch of …. whoa whoa, its No Name Calling Week, I can’t do that.

This is a good thing, as bullying is a huge problem with our children and well, even with adults. Of course, we can help combat that by teaching our children to treat each other with respect.
We all know the old adage “Sticks and Stones will break my bones, but names will NEVER hurt me.”

(While we are talking about this playground sayings, I sort of liked “I’m rubber, your glue what you say bounces off me and sticks to you!”)

Anyway, back to stick and stones. Although there can be some truth to old saying, and that statement is still worth considering, in that the words of others do not form us unless we let them. However, that’s the problem, its is hard to turn those words into affirmation, and thus the modern adage is now “Sticks and Stones will break my bones but names call also hurt me” or something like that. Maybe its “..but names can destroy me”, or …”but names will break my heart” Yes, I think that’s the proper way to say it today “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will break my heart.”

8The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. (Proverbs 18:8, King James Version)

However, look at this:

24Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. (Proverbs 16:24, King James Version)

So, as you go about today, remember the power of the words that you use, and consider what I tell my children when their behavior is, well not what it should be. I always say, would you want to be treated that way?

31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. Luke 6:31 (New International Version, ©2010)

Social Media Story

As you all know I enjoy the merits and virtues of Social Media – Facebook, Twitter and even blogging.  Yesterday I discovered this new video. I think its pretty cool and thought I would share it with you. It tells the wonderful Christmas story in a very new and innovative way. I hope you take a moment to watch.  And then post it to Facebook or tweet it!

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:8-12
