Cookies!

Oh man, today is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day.  And who can resist that great tasting cookies with the fork prints crisscrossed on top?  (well, that doesn’t count those with peanut allergies!) Did you know that recipe was first published in 1932?  When I hear that I sort of feel like Abraham after he realized he had some mighty visitors to his camp.  He ran to his wife and hollered

Quick! Three seahs of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes!

I am not sure Amy will appreciate that shout out this morning, but I might give it a go and see if it results in some deliciousness. Anyway, baking also makes me think of measuring and measuring always brings me back to the way God will judge us.

38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.” Luke 6:38 (NASB)

This thought sure makes it easier to be a little more generous with our stuff, our thoughts, our judgements and our exhibitions of mercy.

Use a large measure today and see how things come back to you.

Measures

Yesterday I attempted to teach a group of high school students about using their time to give.  I don’t know how successful I was at that endeavor, but here are two salient points I tried to deliver to them.  Maybe it will be have more of an impact with  you!

The first thing I tried to press home was how they really control their time, they have more of it than anyone and they can choose how to use it. I reminded them of this quote for which I don’t know who to attribute it.

For every minute you are angry or irritated, you lose 60 seconds of happiness.

I think they found the math there pretty impressive.

The second point was an attempt to show them that using your time to give to others has great returns, especially when you mind the measure that you use to give to others.

Oh course that’s all based on this verse – one that is just full of hope.

I did try to explain this to them with a crayon box and a large trash can.  I hope they understand measures!

Mind the measure you use today, and remember don’t waste those seconds of happiness on things you really can’t control. (or maybe I should say you can control….)

Bowl Season!

Yeah, it’s Bowl week, and it’s gotten off to a great start with to game saving touchdowns late in the game.  I have to say that fourth down call by The Herd was a great play.  But here’s something pretty cool that happened off the field.

As you probably know, the players are rewarded quite well at this games.  The bowl gifts range from TV’s to watches, from iPods to rings. Tons o’ swag – well – of course swag that is under the $300 NCAA limit.  Yesterday however, a few Louisiana Tech players gave their packages to children from the Make-A-Wish foundation.  That’s probably even more incredible than the touchdowns and tackles.  Jump over and read about it here.

Pancake Day

w00t w00t, there are Free Pancakes at IHOP today, as it the IHOP Pancake Day! Which is odd because its a week early this year, but anyway, lets get March Madness off to a great start with “free” pancakes from IHOP ALL DAY.

What does that have to do with anything? Well giving and receiving of course. They are giving away a free short stack to each customer, hoping in return that you donate to their charity. Hm, a few sayings come to mind like ‘What goes around comes around’, ‘treat others how you want to be treated” and then this one from Luke:

Yep, it’s a idea that is found is short order these days. The idea that if you give it will be given back to you. It’s definitely something I lose track of a whole lot. We are so apt to take, that we forget the true meaning. And then the best part – for with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. hm.. I think a need a need measure.

As you interact with people today give free pancakes – and see what you get in return.

How Deep How Wide!

Did you know that this is a cave, or more of a shaft in Mexico that is so wide and deep that the entire Empire State building will fit in it?  Its amazing! Yes, its called the Cave of Swallows.  Its over 1100 feet deep and about 200 feet wide! Its such a big hole that its used by some thrill seekers as a place to base jump!  Amazing!  But if you took the love that Christ has for you, and dumped it in this hole, it would still overflow.  Can you love like that?  He asked you to.

Will you jump in?  Will you jump headfirst into his love?
