One Word 2013

It’s the first real day of the year, the day most of us, minus educators are heading back to the daily grind after hopefully enjoying a great break and time with family. I think I may have spent more hours at home over the last few weeks then I did in October and November combined!  So full of energy and completely rejuvenated I begrudgingly head off to the office to get back to ‘work’.

But it’s a new year, and that means it’s time for a new focus. Today I will reveal my one word for the year. I hope you spent a little time doing this as well. I found this idea actually helped last year.  It was so much more motivating then a list of short-lived resolutions!  (You should try it, really!)

I played with the word renew, but I felt it seemed too New Years dayish, even thought I really liked the concept of always trying to re-create each day in the year.   But I left that and went in a slightly different !  This word was sort of leaked yesterday in the concept of the video that I posted.

This year my word is:

good

It’s an adjective, it’s a noun, it’s an adverb, and I think it is quite motivational. I am hopeful that it can help focus me when I relate to others, when I evaluate my actions, when I spent my money and when I prioritize and plan my activities.   This isn’t a word that I intend to use to describe myself, but something that I hope will keep me focused with the correct mindset each and every day in 2013. I mean look at what the Christ himself said about it.

“Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.” Luke 18:19 NASB

However, since it does describe the Creator of the Universe,  I am hoping that it will help me keep my eye on him!  So with that, just one more thing to add.  I want to extend the one word 365 concept just a small bit, by adding a verse for the year as well:

10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

So that’s my word for the year. What’s yours? Share it in the comments, or add it to the oneword365 site!

By Doing Good

I am short on time and so I just jumped over to the youVersion app this morning to see what inspiration I could find. Well here is what I discovered

It is God’s desire that by doing good you should stop foolish people from saying stupid things about you.Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. Live as servants of God. (1 Peter 2:15, 16 NCV)

And this was very fitting for me today. Make sure you are doing good and striving to live in the grace you has been given. Then you will take away words from those who intend to harm you.

Pursue

Sometimes you are just led to a certain message, and today this one seemed to just jump out to me, so if seemed there is probably a good reason share this today.

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 1 Timothy 6:11

Hope it helps keep you focused on the proper things.

Be good, and do good!

Shubh Diwali

ok, so this may be another day of meaningless chatter, as the early morning hustle and bustle and the the Outlook calendar have commandeered my ‘me time’.  LOL

But seriously, I do have a few great thoughts swirling around to share with you that might actually be enjoyable to read, and hopefully I will ascertain some time at my typewriter to get those in a publishable form soon.

But in the meantime, it’s Diwali today.  That’s a great big festival celebrated by Hindu people that is called the “Festival of Lights”  It’s a time that they celebrate the victory of good over evil, the triumph of light over darkness, and the renewal of life.

I think I can spend a little time thinking about the victory of good over evil, especially since the victory has been won:

57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57  New International Version (NIV)
So, today to my friends from India I say  “Shubh Diwali!”, because the creator of the world has ultimately defeated evil and darkness for us, and has given us such a great way of renewal!

Stored Up

It’s the harvest season, and time to finish up storing, canning and freezing those fresh vegetables so that you will have something yummy to eat in the depth of winter.  I am hoping I will be able to get a few more weeks of tomatoes before the first deep frost comes and terminates their ability to live!

And all that reminds me of some words of the creator of tomatoes – the Christ himself:

35A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.  Matthew 12:35 New International Version (NIV)

It’s an interesting thought for you today to consider – what is stored up in you?
