Giving up Freedom

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is 1 Corinthians 10:23

Everything is Permissible

I mean, what’s not to love there!  That frees us from so much of the bondage of the make up do’s and don’ts that we wrap ourselves up in.  This type of freedom, is really unimaginable, especially considering the traditional and political-correct  boundaries that strip us from freedom.

But of course, that sort of freedom really requires some sort of guidelines – doesn’t it?  That is what the rest of the verse does, as it bounds the freedom of the grounds of positive benefit.

23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive (NIV)

That’s good advice.

However, I  find the next verse to actually be the thing that binds up the freedom in a way that is even more of a challenge.

24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

Hm.. there’s that concept of good again, and not just mine, or being good, but others good.  Not mine but yours. That’s the challenge.  Look at the way the New Century Version words this, it’s even more plain and straightforward

23 “We are allowed to do all things,” but not all things are good for us to do. “We are allowed to do all things,” but not all things help others grow stronger. 24 Do not look out only for yourselves. Look out for the good of others also.

Are we willing to give up our freedom for the good of others – to help them and make them stronger?

Called Out, But Free

I was thinking yesterday as I was driving off with my boys how nice it is to really be free from constraint.  If I want to drive down a particular road I can.  If I want to stay at home, I can.  I have no place that I HAVE to go, and nothing that forces me to do very much of anything.  Seriously, outside of paying taxes, and following some pretty common sense laws ( don’t steal, don’t kill, respect others stuff), I can pretty much do anything I want to do.

That’s a pretty amazing blessing.

“I have the right to do anything,”

Yes!  What a great right! Yet, is a bound we should still give consideration?  Paul writes these words to the believers at Corinth, who also experienced the great blesses of a society that valued freedom.

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything 1 Corinthians 6:12

And that is where the boundary is.  The boundary we self impose lies where things are beginning to not be beneficial or helpful for us and others, and where the thing you do has become your master.  As we approach Memorial Day, lots of people will be thinking about the gift of freedom, as we should.  Just a quick reminder to make sure you are always examining the way you use that wonderful freedom you have received and to remind you that as believers we need to make sure our freedom choices are in line with the requests of the Lord.

17 Therefore,
“Come out from them
and be separate, says the Lord. 2 Corinthians 6:17-18

Friday the 13th

Hey all you Paraskevidekatriaphobics out there.  I suppose most of you will be staying home today, locked inside for security.  Yep, Friday the 13th is upon is! But really, whats the deal with Friday the 13th and why are we taught from a young age that this is a day to fear?

Well it seems that this is the convergence of two traditional unlucky things!

UNLUCKY FRIDAY + UNLUCKY 13 = UNLUCKIER FRIDAY

I guess we have always heard that 13 is an unlucky number for some reason.  But I didn’t realize Friday was given that same name.  But check out this story I discovered while doing a little bit of research

Legend has it: Never change your bed on Friday; it will bring bad dreams. If you cut your nails on Friday, you cut them for sorrow. Don’t start a trip on Friday or you will encounter misfortune. Ships that set sail on a Friday will have bad luck, as in the tale of H.M.S. Friday. One hundred years ago, the British government sought to quell the longstanding superstition among seamen that setting sail on Fridays was unlucky. A special ship was commissioned and given the name “H.M.S. Friday.” They laid her keel on a Friday, launched her on a Friday, selected her crew on a Friday, and hired a man named Jim Friday to be her captain. To top it off, H.M.S. Friday embarked on her maiden voyage on a Friday — and was never seen or heard from again From : http://urbanlegends.about.com/cs/historical/a/friday_the_13th_3.htm

So fun! ( well I guess not for those on the Friday!)

As I was reading some history, it seemed that a lot of this talk about Friday and 13 have a long history in humanity, and that when Christianity spread it change them even more.  It seems to me however, that the presence of the Christ would not have demonized these things, but set people free from the fear of them!

The LORD is my light and my salvation–whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?  Ps 27:1

or what about this bit of truth

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8

Seriously, if God if for us, can a day of the week and a number conspire against us?

Enjoy the great day! ( and leave the salt at home!)
