Forgetting and Remembering

I can’t believe I forgot and let y’all down, I didn’t realize yesterday’s date until late last night!  10-11-12!  What fun!  I guess I will know have to wait until next November to have that sort of fun with dates.

Since I am writing and you are now reading about forgeting, and remembering, maybe a little look back in Deuteronomy is good today.  This promise was given to the Israelites as they left Egypt and entered the promise land, but might just be a good thing for us to remember in this time and age as well.

11 But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today. 12 For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in, 13 and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful! 14 Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt. 15 Do not forget that he led you through the great and terrifying wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, where it was so hot and dry. He gave you water from the rock! 16 He fed you with manna in the wilderness, a food unknown to your ancestors. He did this to humble you and test you for your own good. 17 He did all this so you would never say to yourself, ‘I have achieved this wealth with my own strength and energy.’ 18 Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.   Deuteronomy 8:18 New Living Translation (NLT)

Roll (Hallow)Tide

As we move on through the Hallowtide, today is All Saint’s Day.  Although, personally, I find the general idea of sainting a person a little unsettling, as none of us can earn our goodness, it is given through the blood of Jesus.  But even with that on the table, it is good I think to learn from the example of others that have tread this ground before us, and if that is a way we can highlight those that have done wonderful things with the time they have been given – so be it!

And so, I guess it’s only appropriate to consider another one of those verses I seem to mention a lot from the fun book of Hebrews about realizing the others that have lived on this great big blue and green ball.  After the writer of this book travels through time calling out those ‘saints’ that have gone before him in Hebrews 11, he pens this

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  Hebrews 12

Gain strength from remembering those that have gone before you, and do not lose heart!
