Our Thoughts

I have been spending some time recently examining what I spend my time thinking about.  And let me tell you, I am not sure I like what I have learned about myself.

This little exercise started when I discovered this quote sometime last week

“Act the way you’d like to be and soon you’ll be the way you act.” – Leonard Cohen

After reading that I started to think about how I acted, but I decided to also take a investigatory look at what I was thinking about – especially since at this time I spend a lot of time alone in my office at work.

As I mentioned above it’s a little sobering.  I was surprised how little time I spent on certain topics and how much I spend thinking about other topics.  Even more surprising was how much time I spent thinking about me!

It’s even more sobering when the Proverbs echo the quote above ( more than likely its the other way around!!!)

7For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Proverbs 23:7 King James Version (KJV)

Of course then there is this little diddy as well

34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Luke 12:34 King James Version (KJV)

Hm.  The other day Alex was driving on the interstate for the first time.  We started to swerve toward the shoulder, and Alex said as he was straighten up the car, I was looking over there at that barn ( or whatever it was on the side of the road).  Yep, he learned an important fact, the car goes where you look!  And from that we know, we go where we think.  Spend a little time thinking about what you are thinking about!

Magnetic Inspiration

Last week, I was cleaning up some stuff in my office, and reorganizing my mind at work when I stumble upon some old word magnets I used to use for inspiration.  I had taken them down in frustration a few years ago when I was feeling very selfish and uninspired.  But last week I put them back up and I hope they will spark you either by what they say, or maybe you will find some words that motivate you through out the day.

The words on the magnetic – Today: live, give, reach, do and solve are simple verbs to help remind me of how I should be spending my day , today.

  1. Live the day to the fullest
  2. Give to others
  3. Reach out to others
  4. Do what needs to be done
  5. Solve problems with creativity

That’s a pretty good list.  Those simple verbs are just enough to give me a reminder with each email, instant message and choice throughout the day of my potential impact on others and they help focus me to make sure that I am getting the most out of each day.

Yes, yes, a little cheesy, but whatever it takes to keep the days moving in the right direction!

So with that a few simple short and powerful verses to get your going on Monday!

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.Psalm 90:12

Each man’s life is but a breath.
Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro:
He bustles about, but only in vain;
he heaps up wealth not knowing who will get it. Psalm 39:5-6

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.John 10:10 ESV

A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor. Proverbs 22:9

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.Ephesians 4:32

Today !  Live, Give, Reach Do and Solve!

Shining Brighter

Ok Ok, sorry for the delay today.  I am afriad you may have thought I was caught up in the excitement of Saturday, but alas we are all still here!  I am not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing!  But since we are, the show must go on and we need to continue the “daily buffeting” and renewing that we do each day.  I was delayed today because of some end of the school year stuff at the boy’s school.

So, this is a bit of mid day encouragement instead of a morning starter.

18 The path of the righteous is like the morning sun,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day. Proverbs 4:18

I hope that you are shining bright to those around you today and as the Andrew’s principal said at his program this morning, I hope you are making the world a more beautiful place to be today!

REM, Apples and Fun

Well, this could be my last post.  Of course, if this guy is right, then I won’t have any readers on Monday anyway.  Oh, you haven’t heard?  Some guy has predicted the world to end sometime Saturday evening. I   I guess it’s time to break out some R.E.M.  Personally, I subscribe to this theory:

32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Mark 13:32, New International Version)

Anyway, what would you do differently today if that guy was correct. If you knew tomorrow was the end with 100 percent certainty, would you approach to day any differently?  And if you would, why are we living that way anyway?  Yes, there is the money aspect of work, and the aspects of planning for the future that are good and right.  But what about other life choices?  Other things that seem important and stressful?  Would you let them go?

I wonder how many of us would change our words and the way we treat others.  This video was set to me earlier this week by a fellow DB reader.  I tried to embed it, but was unable to in the ‘short time’ that I had with it. ( I didn’t want to waste my last days on video embedded 🙂 ).  Anyway, please take the 2 minutes to watch this video, it’s pretty good, and then consider the words that you are using with those around you and the impact that they have on people’s lives.

11A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. (Proverbs 25:11, King James Version)

Oh and one last thought for some Friday ramblings  When Amy pulled off the day on her calendar this morning the quote for today was “The purpose of Fun is to have it!”  Have a great and funtastic day!

Auto Picker

It’s Friday the 13th, so I was going to write about chasing black cats, throwing salt over my shoulder and running under ladders, but I realized I already did, so I guess I shouldn’t tempt fate.

Of course, now I don’t have anything to write about, because I have exhausted the fun of the day.  Maybe I should do another rerun and bring up the Friday song again.

So fitting with the superstition of the day I decided to “roll the dice” and pick a verse of the day that was 5/13.  I started with Proverbs, but that was a little awkward,

13 I would not obey my teachers
or turn my ear to my instructors. (Proverbs 5:13, New International Version)

So I rolled again in Pslams but that did not exist and then jumped to Matthew the start of the New Testament and found this:

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. (Matthew 5:13, New International Version)

Be Salt today!
