Wretched

I wrote this post a few weeks ago, but didn’t post it.  But for various and sundry reasons, I keep coming back to it.  I am sure you can relate.

It’s starting to be one of those days when I can relate to Paul.  I am sure that lots of you feel this way as well

For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.

Drives me NUTS.

And it drove Paul nuts

21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am!

I hate feeling like the wretched man.

Luckily, as like Paul, we all have one form of deliverance and hope.

Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7

Stay the course, and keep fighting the battle inside your mind today.  The victory is worth it.

Eternal Swag

I am getting this out late today because I had to take the kitty to the vet this morning – and then attempt to catch up at work. So just a short thought today.

This past weekend I was teaching some junior high boys about Ananias and Paul and how that Ananias guy was impressive risk taker. As we transitioned from a history lesson to life in the middle schools of America, they suggested the followers of the Christ had “no swag”.

The sad part is I understand what they are talking about somewhat,  because as they put it sometime those that follow the Way, can be “lame”.   However, there’s not much lame, in my opinion about getting out and treating others the way they should be treating.  It may not be as flashy or as exciting as some other things in life, but it probably makes a much larger impact.

Personally, I think the lameness of followers of the Christ come when they stop following the man who died on a cross for an act he didn’t commit and start after the judgements and short-term visions in their own hearts.  And actually I think that is what they were talking about as well.

I dunno, this one is a real brain stumper to me, and the reason I even write about it is not as much for encouragement to you, as it is to challenge you today – in two ways.

First, why do those that follow the Christ come off as lame?

and Second, are you focused on having ‘swag’ here and now, or as I told the boys, are you thinking about have “eternal swag”.   ( I am not even sure what that really is, but I know that is how the followers of Christ really live.)

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.  2 Corinthians 4:16-18 New International Version (NIV)

And I guess, the tertiary challenge is to think about how this next generation is thinking.  I know it has stayed in my head all week so far.

Thoughts on Thinking – Part 2

It’s pretty amazing really.

So yesterday I had that verse running through my head all day  – “as a man thinketh so is he”.  And then I foundeth myself adding ‘eth’ to every verb I saideth.

No, not really, let me start over.

So yesterday I had that verse running through my head all day  – “as a man thinketh so is he”. And then I would look at my thoughts – and just shake my head.  It is so amazing that I could think this verse one minute and then next thought be a thought about something so removed from what I am striving to become.

Ok, show of hands – or by adding comments ( hint hint) – who else experienced this same thing?

Well, no matter, I know I am not alone, because the writer of a huge chunk of the New Testament of the Bible says the exact same thing.

15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. Romans 7 NIV

I have a feeling he was just as dismayed as I am today when he penned those words. But, just like Paul, the author of those words, we have a way of escape from this trap.

21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!  Romans 7 NIV

Yep, there’s the way out.

So, keep working to put your treasure in this Christ and I think you will see the car begin to drift in a direction you want it to go – despite this ridiculous war that is waging inside out minds.  But boy, I wish that war was not going on.

Unsure?

This morning I am been a little unsure of what to write.  My brain is swirling in lots of things, but no clear thoughts to share.  So I just after wondering aimlessly around the house looking for inspiration from the cats, the sun rise, the boys, or anything that I could find, I reluctantly just opened up my Bible.

After turning about 4 pages, I saw this:

12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. 13Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.1 Timothy 1:12-17 (New International Version)

So right there it is.  Very encouraging words for a morning of uncertainty.  Paul says, Hey look I was terrible, full of problems, angry, violent, and just blame rough, and the Christ poured grace all over me.  Then he says, he’ll do the same for you.  Wow, that’s a nice promise and a provides a certain amount of certainty, doesn’t?

And then of course, when we are given a gift of grace and unlimited patience like that, we can turn face the day with vigor and sureness and boldness.  Can we bestow this same gives on the others that we encounter today.  Surely, we can.  Pour out the grace that you have been given to those around you.

This is Love Calling

Its Monday! and this is love calling.  It’s the start of another work week, which means its another chance to get into the world and impact people.  Another chance to renew your mind, refresh your spirit, put the past behind you and move forward.

Take courage from Paul’s prayer for the Colossians

9For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:9-14 (New International Version)

This is love calling , out to the broken…

You may be knocked down, but you not out forever.  Live up to the calling today!
