No Profit

Last night as I was going to sleep I was looking for something to watch, and noticed that someone had DVRed a movie called “The 13th Warrior”.  It was just interesting enough to keep my attention, but not overly remarkable.  However, I did perk up a little when I heard the viking Herger the Joyous say

Fear profits a man nothing.

For some reason those 5 words were still with me this morning.  Maybe because they are so similar to the words spoken by my leader

28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28 New International Version (NIV)

or these words penned by one of his closest friends on this Earth.

18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love.  1 John 4:18  Common English Bible (CEB)

Today as you go hither and yon ( I had to talk like Viking after watching that movie), remember Herger’s words (and Johns, and mostly probably – Jesus’) and live life with love, not with fear!

Repent and Be

I read this quote a few weeks ago, and finally have returned to it to share on the Buffet.

As long as he doesn’t convert it into action, it does not matter how much a man thinks about his repentance. C.S. Lewis

It’s a good observation by a very observant man.  We can think about being different for years, but if we don’t take some actions – no matter how small, there will be no change in our behaviors.  The scriptures even point this out as they echo the repent and ‘action verb’ phrase quite often.  I am especially found of Repent and Live from Ezekiel and Repent and Do from Revelation.  But I guess I would be remiss if I did also mention Acts 2:38, as Peter calls to his listeners “Repent and Be Baptized”!

Today, take action, don’t just think about change, take a little step and begin to produce fruit.

Produce fruit in keeping with repentance Matthew 3:8 New International Version (NIV)

Today’s Challenge

Oh Twitter.  Since I have actively started following people I don’t ever have to come up with an original thought. 🙂

And that is good for a Monday morning!  Today, I will let the great author Max Lucado speak to you as I steal a thought from him.

That’s very similar advice that I use a lot when running hard, or racing.  As a runner, you don’t focus on the entire distance, you break it down – especially when it gets hard.  For instance, when I run a hard work out, I may break it down to just things on the road – like – just to the mailbox, and then to the next mailbox, and then to the mark on the road.  Short, attainable, focused goals. And before you know it you have maintained the effort for the entire distance!  YEAH!

So today, tackle the challenge right in front of you – today, or maybe just the next 5 seconds!

34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:34 New International Version (NIV)

Win The Day

I either heard some one say this or read it somewhere this weekend.  It wasn’t the first time I had heard it, but for some reason it stuck with me this time. It’s was three simple words:

Win the Day

Such a profound idea.  It may at first seem quite short-sighted, just focusing on today, but I don’t think it that is necessarily incorrect, nor do I think that those words mean that to win the day you forsake any activities that may have longer lasting effects.  I do however, think it can really help to focus on what’s in front on you, and promotes the idea that winning the little battles eventually wins the war – or that little steps each day will change you dramatically.

So, as you approach the problems, challenges, and opportunities in your life today –

Win the Day.

Overcome temptation, Today!

Reach Others Today!

Drip Jesus, Today!

Give us the food we need for each day. Matthew 6:11 NCV
