The Good Shepherd

It’s Friday, so a light thought for today.  I found this link yesterday to pictures that will restore your faith in humanity.  I am not sure these pictures really do that, but they do show people treating others with respect and that’s it a good thing.  The one set that really stood out to me are the pictures of the shepherds rescuing their sheep from the ocean.  There are so many connotations for us in this set of pictures.

But what I think about is this parable that Jesus told.

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.  Luke 15

and then I look back at that picture and this about the Christ, the good shepherd, reaching in to the ocean and saving us, he beloved sheep.

Do the same today.

“Feed my Sheep”

Career Day!

This morning I off to the school to talk with the high school students about the greatness of software development for career day.  It is going to be a fun morning, talking with them a little about their future and providing advice from a seasoned veteran.

I am been thinking about what one message I should tell them about life, outside of the software world.  My mind immediately goes here to Micah 6

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good,
and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.

or to Luke 10

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”

What one thing would you tell them?

Happy Halloween

It’s Halloween so it’s seems appropriate to write something about mummies, the undead and demons.   And although I am tempted to write something about The Walking Dead, which I must say I started watching this week so I could understand what it was about, I probably should leave that for another time.

So how about some mummies,

14 So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead

40 Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” 41 So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. 42 You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” 43 Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”  Luke 11 (NLT)

the undead,

50 Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, 52 and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. Matthew 27 (NLT)

and demons.

19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror James 2:19 New Living Translation (NLT)

Wow, it’s pretty amazing that we follow a God that is in complete control of all of those things that we fear and use to symbolize the darkness.  That’s actually more than amazing, it’s just plain awesome!

Enjoy the fun of Halloween, but remember the reality of the darkness, and the power that God and his Son have over that darkness – and maybe pick a side!

Go and Do Likewise

Some times I find myself wondering what I should try to do in my days as I interact with people and go whatever it is that I do.

Yesterday during the sermon at church I was reminded of this

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” Luke 10:26-28 New International Version (NIV)

So, I wrote it down for you.

I think I have written something like this before, but since it seems that I get distracted on other things, and sometimes have to check myself around what I am doing, I thought that it wouldn’t hurt to say it again.

That’s pretty much all we have to do.  So, Go and Do the same as you travel the road!

Unlearn

It’s hard to follow up on Pirates, unless you reference  Star Wars!!!

Yoda: You must unlearn what you have learned.

Yes, sometimes we have to unlearn our thoughts and ways to understand the ways of the Master.  For instance, look at these words he uses to call Simon the fisherman to follow him

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” Luke 5:10b

Make sure as you follow the Master today, you are letting him lead.  And where you need to let go, unlearn, and well.. watch what happens!
