Blessed

There has been something about the stories reported by our news media and the events going on our country right now that continually sends my mind to the words of the Savior in Matthew 5

He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.  Matthew 5:1-12 NIV
I have especially been dwelling on verse 4 and 6, and the idea of mourning and hungering for righteousness.  I don’t think verse 4 is necessarily about mourning for a death of a loved one,  although it can work in that context.  I think it fits with the rest of the chapter to think about mourning in a spiritual sense.
And that’s where I am as I watch and observe so many things that are happening around us right now, the loss of some common sense and respect that linger around our social issues.  The violence and anger and bitterness that consume our political arenas. And on and on and so forth..
But there’s comfort here in these words of the Christ.  And encouragement.  And a call to keep moving, keep teaching, keep loving, and keep your light shining!

Tis a Gift

Today is Joseph Brackett’s birthday.  You probably don’t know him, but you know is work.  It goes like this.

‘Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free

‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

Yes, Brackett is the author and composer  of “Simple Gifts”, a classic tune that we all love.

To celebrate, here’s one of my all time favorite performances by a band I love.

For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

2 Corinthians 1:12 ESV

Cinco de Mayo

On the road today, so here’s 5 verses from Romans 5 to celebrate the 5th day of the 5th month.

“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭5:1-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

May the Fourth

It’s here again, that punny day we know as Stars Wars day.

There so much to say about this, I am not sure where to actually start.  So, I think I will just go with the words of Zechariah as we consider what is true about the force that we can really use.

So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 4:6 (NIV)

So, May the Fourth be with you!

and may his spirit lead you!
