There has been something about the stories reported by our news media and the events going on our country right now that continually sends my mind to the words of the Savior in Matthew 5
He said:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:1-12 NIV
I have especially been dwelling on verse 4 and 6, and the idea of mourning and hungering for righteousness. I don’t think verse 4 is necessarily about mourning for a death of a loved one, although it can work in that context. I think it fits with the rest of the chapter to think about mourning in a spiritual sense.
And that’s where I am as I watch and observe so many things that are happening around us right now, the loss of some common sense and respect that linger around our social issues. The violence and anger and bitterness that consume our political arenas. And on and on and so forth..
But there’s comfort here in these words of the Christ. And encouragement. And a call to keep moving, keep teaching, keep loving, and keep your light shining!
