Veni, Veni, Emmanuel

It’s that time when carols are played over and over again.  In quite an unusual manner, I have just recently been able to start listening to the carols this December.  I think Sirius XM playing Marshmallow World over and over again and the 25 channels of my TV playing constant Christmas music have soured me just a little bit.

I was glad to finally sit down at my desk and listen to a few of the deeper carols and be reminded of again of what has become my favorite carol over the last few years ( here, herehere and here) – O Come O Come Emmanuel.

I can’t put my finger on the exact reason that this particular song has taken the number one spot.  I think it’s because it not only reminds me of the longing of the world for the Christ to be born long ago, but it also echoes the similar sentiment that follows of the Christ have today around the return of the same King.  Each verse  ( and there are a lot of versions and verses)  extols the virtues of the coming King and encourages us to rejoice in that coming.

But rejoice in so far as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 1 Peter 4:13

It also reminds me again how much joy is found in knowing that his coming resolved so much of the complexity of the world for us.

Sing it with me, O Israel….

O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease;
Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Forward

I was surfing the twittersphere over the weekend when I stumbled upon this quote from a Triathlete magazine story.

“I believe that, no matter what race day or life brings, that putting one foot in front of the other is everything.”

Some days, most days,  you have to keep pushing forward, no matter what the day brings.    If its cold and rainy, hot and humid, or just blah, the key is to just keep moving. Ironman athletes encourage each other with the phrase ‘Just keep moving forward’. Always moving forward is key to that event and like this little quote says, it key to life.

There’s also a little bit of biblical wisdom laced in there.  Consider

The righteous keep moving forward, and those with clean hands become stronger and stronger.  Job 17:9

And

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.Philippians 3:13

Friends, Let us keep moving forward, one step at a time, towards our common goal.

Just One Day

It would be an amazing day for me if I actually did the right thing from the time my iPhone plays its sweet tune at 5am until my head hits the pillow at, well, whenever it does. By the way, my iPhone tells me I should hit the pillow at 10.  Bless Siri’s heart.

But seriously, wouldn’t you love a day where everything you did was good and right and in line with the will of the Creator.

Just one day.

Just one day to be given the ‘Ohio State’ treatment and be treated as more than you really are.

Just one day.

Unfortunately, most of the time I feel like the Columbia Lions from the 80’s, where the losing streak just rolls on.

The good thing is our creator keeps short accounts.

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. Jude 1:24-25

Amen!

Have mercy on me, O God, because of Your unfailing love. Because of Your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. — Psalm 51:1

AMEN!

Maybe, in actuality, every day in the eyes of the Lord is a day of perfection?  Maybe he does see us as Blue Chippers despite our performance?  Maybe we are like Ohio State?

Maybe if I remembered that the day would be so much better?  Maybe my light would shine?

Maybe that one day I yearn for is actually every day?

Three Builders

Last November I found myself in a church library waiting for an event to start.  Being a curious soul I started to review the collection of books and eventually found myself draw to an old book that was a collection of poems.  I noted several of these pieces and stored those away.

For months I didn’t think about them at all, but last month I rediscovered the selections and since that time this particular one continues to surface in the front of my mind.  It’s called Three Builders.  You have probably heard it before. This version is told like this:

“What are you doing?” a man asked of three laborers beside a building under construction.

The first man replied “Stone-cuttin’.”

The second smiled, “Puttin’ in time –until a better job comes along.”

The third man waited a moment and then said simply, “I’m building a cathedral!”

Sometimes when I go to work, I forgot that I’m there to build big things – like a cathedral.  It’s so easy to get caught up in the mundane, the chaotic, the trivial and the political mumbo jumbo and develop a view that I am just there to cut stone or to put in time.  Instead, I long that my days are filled with thoughts of creating and building big things. I love those big transformational project with incredible vision and earth changing direction, and I have been fortunate enough to be a part of many of those in my working days.

But really most days, I do look at work more than work, but as steps on the way to building a masterpiece.  A masterpiece that should have lasting value.  I am reminded of the one thing I think about when I think about my father-in-law.  Well, maybe one of four things!  Early in my career, he pointed me to this quote, and it has impacted my work days, and my personal life ever since.

Therefore, when we build, let us think that we build for ever. Let it not be for present delight, nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say as they look upon the labour and wrought substance of them, ” See! this our fathers did for us. – John Ruskin

I thought about these thoughts when I built my house.  I kept this quote on my cube wall and thought about it everyday back when I wrote code.  (Interesting enough, there’s still code I wrote 20 years ago that is still running!)  I still think about ‘buiding forever’ and  future generations saying ‘our fathers did for us’ when I work even today.  I think that is why the Three Builders story spoke so loudly to me.

All of this applies to more than just physical work.  It also applies to our responsibilities to impact people in a way that they are changed forever, and that future generations are glad they were changed.  It’s in building relationships, treating others with respect, making the other’s day better and pushing others to find more in themselves.  Those construction activities bring glory to the Creator and can impact the lives of others for forever.

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Let us always build big and build for the future in everything we do.

Great Work

Every Monday I have an email sent to myself with these ten words.

I’m doing a great work and I can’t come down.

It’s the words the Nehemiah (6:3) used to answer the other leaders who wanted to stop him from rebuilding the wall.  Today, I use it as a reminder to keep myself away from the distractions and temptations that the world throws our way every day.  Distractions that would keep me from doing the great work that lies in front on me.  Distractions that would take me away from my purpose – which in the end is to bring glory to the Creator!

It’s Monday! Stay on the wall!  Keep up the great work.  Why would you go down to them?
