Fiesta Hoy

Yesterday I spend some time in Epcot and was able to visit one of my most favorite rides in the park. No not Soarin’. We always head over to Mexico and ride the ride formerly known as El Rio de Tiempo. For some reason i just love that silly little ride.
Anyway there is one section I like to call little its a small world. When you enter that section there is a big banner that says Fiesta Hoy.
That’s one of the my favorite things about this place its a celebration everyday. I think the trick for us is to figure out how to turn the stress that Joel wrote about yesterday it something that helps us celebrate and find joy in the day. That’s tough, but it’s something this place and the mercy given to me from my Father help to inspire in me.
For instance read this from my good friend Tamara whose grandmother is dying this week.

With her vitals fluctuating that tells us the end is near. I am so sad, but cannot wait for the moment God takes the old oxygen cords from her and gives her brand new lungs & whole new body. What a day that will be!

Lets find a way to enjoy the journey while keeping an eye on the destination! Fiesta Hoy!

Lifeguards

Today and all week you have a special treat.  While I am off on vacation, others have joined the fight to keep the encouragement coming. Today’s post is from Joey Davis who also blogs at www.clearcreekaveragejoe.blogspot.com.
Enjoy!

Lifeguard…usually a part-time Summer job given to young men and women.  I remember being a kid and thinking that being a Lifeguard was the best job in the world.  Plenty of sunshine, fresh air, and I could go swimming anytime I wanted.  I’m sure that’s what the subject of my story thought as well.

He’s a lifeguard.  And like most other lifeguards, when he took his training, he could almost smell the fresh air, feel the sunshine in his skin, (and let’s be honest) he could envision all the pretty girls wanting him to came to their rescue.

Somewhere along the line, something went dreadfully wrong.  He got a job guarding the children’s splash pool at the local city park.  Day in and day out he sat by a pool that was too shallow to drown a cat and watched little children splash water all over each other.  At night, in his dreams, instead of the sounds of pretty girls begging for his attention, he could hear the squealing of playful little children.

One afternoon, he was watching my kids.   My wife sat by the pool and watched as well.  On this particular day it was a good thing that she was watching.  Olivia and Sawyer were fine, but the lifeguard wasn’t.

As Melissa watched the children, she began to wonder when the splash pool would be closing for the summer.  So she went over to the lifeguard to ask him.  When she got to his chair, he had the bill of his cap pulled down to shade his eyes, his hands were resting on his cheeks and his body was fixed in a posture that made him appear to be totally focused and attentive to the happenings in the pool.  There was only one problem; he was asleep!

Imagine what could have happened.  Parents had entrusted their children’s lives to this fellow and he fell asleep on the job.  Maybe he was tired.  Maybe he was bored.  Maybe this job just wasn’t what he had in mind when he became a lifeguard. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter.  He should have never fallen asleep on the job. . .

Our expectations of Christianity aren’t always grounded in realism.  Being a Christian doesn’t make us healthy, wealthy, or wise.  It makes us forgiven and hopefully grateful.  And with this blessing comes great responsibility.  God entrusts us to reach the world with his life-saving message.  We’re lifeguards so to speak.

Being a Christian isn’t always fun.  Sometimes we are called into circumstances we would rather avoid.  But who we are, and what we provide for the world, is important. God is counting on us to bring living water to a dying world.  Don’t fall asleep on the job!

Cool Dark Morning

I love autumn mornings.  It’s so cool outside, and its dark again, and all I want to do is sleep. Add Friday on top of that and you have a snooze button sort of morning.

However, a day of work was beckoning and so sometimes you have to discard rest and and push forward.  That’s how it is in our lives as Christ followers as well.  Sometimes it’s work.  All you want to do is fall into the comfort of being self absorbed, but we have to discard that and continue to push forward.

So today is Friday, stay strong and stay persistent of your service!

7To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.  Romans 2:7 (New International Version)

Are You Listening?

There was a preacher I remember from my youth ( not that I am old now or anything), that used to always say in the middle of his sermons “Are you Listening?”.  It was sort of weird that he would get to the end of a sentence and just add in “Are you Listening”, “Are you Listening”?

As a young man, I thought maybe he had spotted a napping listener, or had looked over at the teenagers, but I soon realized he was saying “Do you hear what I am telling you.”

This is great advice and something to ponder today.  “Are you Listening”, or just reading, or hearing and changing nothing?

22-24Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.

25But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action. (James 1:22-25, The Message)

F-A-N-A-T-I-C

As you know I am always looking around for different types of music for motivation.  So a few weeks ago I was reminded of Lecrae, a Christian rapper.  I had heard some of his stuff, but never went to check it closer.  Then I went out to spend the weekend with a bunch of middle school kids.  After that, I decided I needed to check out Lecrae.

I am not much of a Hip Hop sort of guy.  Usually the most hip hop I listen to is before football games when its blasting in the stadium, but I like this guy’s words and his message

I’m a F-A-N-A-T-I-C, Fanatic
I rep Christ till I D-I-E, Fanatic
I’m not extreme, I’m redeemed with faith
To serve a God whose extremely great
I’m a Fanatic – Lecrae

He and several of his co-rappers have just started on a tour this week called Unashamed.  I am pretty impressed with their message.  I think there something there to listen to.  Here is what Trip Lee (I think) says in the below clip “We are to serve our brother, serve our sisters , serve the Lord and humble ourselves and do whats necessary for the Lord to get the glory.”  That’s good stuff.  Take a listen:

It’s interesting that they have used Romans one one six (1:16) as a theme verse.  That seems like a pretty appropriate challenge for today

16I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. Romans 1:16 (New International Version)

Are you ready to join the one one six clique and live a life where you are unashamed? It’s the Power!

Running with us or you can hate me, but it will be hard to shut us down…. (Shut Us Down)
