Back Roads and Trust

Last Sunday when I was driving a way I had not been before I allowed Google Maps to lead me through a part of central Kentucky. I turned off the well-known interstate at sunset. The sun faded over the hills as my recognition of where I was and the roads I was traveling faded. Onward I pressed. The roads became narrower, less traveled and full of  curves.  Signs that said things like “Break in Pavement Ahead” appeared. In my mind the road became darker and populated with all sorts of things and people you don’t want to see at night. And my confidence in the ability of my vehicle to round the next turn or the climb the next hill weakened.

“I’m going to break down and be stranded out here in the middle of no where Kentucky” I thought to myself.

Just went I thought the next turn would lead me on to a small dirt road to nowhere I come upon an intersection with a well-traveled and known state highway!  The effort had been rewarded, and the anxiety was fruitless.

I am not comparing trust in Google Maps with trust with God, however, I think you can see the connection to our lives.  We want to let the Lord lead us, but we freak out when things are not how we thought they might be.  Turning over the control to the Creator can be scary, but I think he knows the way.  And the result will be better than you expected!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

World Cup Fever

I have a case of World Cup Fever going on right now. So I wondered, if the game of soccer was mentioned in the great text. So, I went to The Google to see what it said and found some interesting stuff.

First, a list of bible verses about soccer.

Then, pins that combine soccer and the Bible.

And then, the soccer bible and the SoccerBible on Twitter! ( those are not really related) and even a Soccer Bible Camp.

But in the end, I still come back to one of my favorite verses when the mix of athletics and spirituality are combined.

25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control,[a] lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 English Standard Version (ESV)

Enjoy the World Cup, but stay focused on the imperishable prize!

The Game of Life- Strategy Guide

I write frequently about making sure you make each and every day count. We are only given 7 or 8 year sized handfuls of them. This strategy guide does a great job of explaining the game which is our life.

Play hard and smart!

A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. (Proverbs 13:4 NIV)

Our Hearts Are Yours

It’s Monday and I am back from vacationland! What better way to reinsert into the ‘real’ world then one simple guiding thought. Heed the example in these passionate words from the Christ.

“yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42 NIV)

Start off this week by handing over your heart to the will of the One.
