Panic Day

It’s Panic Day.

what, it is.. What am I supposed to do. I don’t know.  Oh no.  I ,, I ,, I ..

What do I do?  Where am I supposed to be? This is so stressful.

I don’t have a clue what Panic Day is, but it’s seems like a good time to just remind yourself about where to deposit all of that stress and anxiety.

25-26“If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

27-29“Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

30-33“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

34“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. Matthew 6:25-34 The Message (MSG)

and this one as well:

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6

People Like People

There is a group that suggests you should were a name tag that says “Hello, my name is ____” around all today. There reasoning — who knows.

And then there’s this dude, who has worn a name tag like that for over 4000 days straight! Odd! His premise? Treat people like people!

Well, I can definitely subscribe to that thought, name tag or not.

So, today, I will be wearing a name tag, not because I want to, but because I am spending the day at an IBM training facility and their security requires me too! And I will attempt to treat people like people. And that has nothing to do with IBM security, but more with the suggestion of the Christ. How about you?

12Treat others as you want them to treat you. This is what the Law and the Prophets are all about. Matthew 7:12 Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Strengthen My Hands

Over the last few weeks, the preacher at my church has been doing his stuff from the lesser known book of Nehemiah.  A book about a guy who gets compelled to rebuild the city of Jerusalem, and becomes very very focused on his mission.

Well, in this story, there are of course, enemies, and detractors.  Those detractors constantly beat on him with words, taunts, threats, and other mischief.  Just think about them like the Occupy movement. But instead of killing the grass at your local courthouse, consider if those guys where camped, well, on you.  And the fact is, we all have detractors that are camped on us. It may not be a person, it may be an idea, or a habit, or thought pattern, or behavior.  But there is it is day after day, wearing you down.

And so, during his spiel last Sunday my eyes wandered over to this one verse in Nehemiah, as he responds to an advance from his detractors.

9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.”

But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.” Nehemiah 6:9 New International Version (NIV)

Do you ever feel like that?  Do you ever feel like those detractors our hoping that you will get too weak and not complete your task?  Well maybe today it’s time to borrow Nehemiah’s prayer.

“Now strengthen my hands.”

Super Tuesday

20120306-082013.jpgYeah, it’s Super Tuesday! If you live in one of those states, use your right to vote today.

But really, we need to find another reason to call today Super Tuesday besides just lots of elections going on. Somewhere, there is something that makes this day really appropriate to be called a Super Tuesday.

I immediately thought of Psalm 118, but decided that is a little overused, and kept thinking, what else makes today super? What even supersedes that facts that God himself made the day?

How about this?

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

yeah, that’s pretty super!

Enjoy the Day!

Fun with Names Day

I keep finding these absolutely ridiculous days, and I keep finding this desire to share them – and I am not even sure why.

For instance, this week is Celebrate Your Name Week, which evidently goes by the acronym CYNW.  And today is Fun Facts about Names Day.  Odd.  You can check out the web site and see all sorts of fun facts that will make this day terrific for those you share them with!

So since it is CYNW week, I just thought maybe a quick reminder about the many names of that guy we claim to follow might be a refreshing start to Monday morning.  So I searched the Interwebs and found this wordle.  There all the go now it seems.

That’s a pretty good list, and it reminds me of this verse from Isaiah that describes some of those names

6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6  New International Version (NIV)

Those seem like a description of a dude that might be a good one to hang around and learn from!
