This morning I have been thinking about the hymn ‘Pierce My Ear’. It is a hymn that is based on this section of Exodus;
But if he makes this statement: ‘I hereby declare my love for my master, my wife, and my children. I don’t want to leave as a free man,’ then his master must bring him to God. The master must bring him to the door or the doorframe and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his slave for life. (Exodus 21:5, 6 GWT)
What I find so intriguing is the willful submission to a master. This is something I was teaching the youth about yesterday. The creator of the world has asked us to give him our lives. To cast our lot in with him. To willingly give up our desires and replace them with his. And that is what has brought me around to this song. This hymn is completely about the willing surrender of freedom to a master. This is something to think about today. Will you choose the good master to submit or something else?
