Freedom via Doing

It’s probably a good idea to follow-up the verse2014 from James that I shared yesterday with a little more context around that bit of teaching from the brother of Jesus.  Doing brings freedom!

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.   James 1:22–25 NIV

And not just any doing, but doing the word. This doesn’t mean following a set of rules – the old law. This means letting the new law work in you. Which sometimes is only a matter of getting out-of-the-way of yourself. Study it, think on it, let it transform your heart and allow the spirit to work. Then, kick fear to the curb and start doing what it says.

When you

I was recently browsing the sermon of Jesus in Matthew 6, and thought it was interesting that he started this particular section by saying “when you do ‘acts of righteousness'”.   It was not “if you do”, or when you talk about doing, but when you do!  There’s an obvious expectation from this guy that we will do.  He goes on to mention giving, fasting and praying and sets up a whole different set of guidelines to follow when you do those things.

So interesting that he obviously expects that we will be doers!

How about you?

Go and Do Likewise

Some times I find myself wondering what I should try to do in my days as I interact with people and go whatever it is that I do.

Yesterday during the sermon at church I was reminded of this

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” Luke 10:26-28 New International Version (NIV)

So, I wrote it down for you.

I think I have written something like this before, but since it seems that I get distracted on other things, and sometimes have to check myself around what I am doing, I thought that it wouldn’t hurt to say it again.

That’s pretty much all we have to do.  So, Go and Do the same as you travel the road!

A Great Question

I saw this question yesterday and thought it would be a good one to pass along.

What are you doing today that will outlive you?

That’s a pretty good motivator – assuming you are leaving a legacy that impacts others in a positive way!

Anyway, think about that today as you go.

18 Even when I am old and gray,
do not forsake me, my God,
till I declare your power to the next generation,
your mighty acts to all who are to come. Psalm 71:18 New International Version (NIV)

Go and Do…

After years spending time strapped to a phone, I have developed quite an inability to focus on one task for very long and more recently a strong desire to do.

And because of that, I think, these words popped into my head this morning

Go and do likewise.

36“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:36-37 NIV

If you remember, this these words are the conclusion of the story of the Good Samaritan. Jesus’ words are all about action!  He tells us that we should go.  But not only go, but show mercy and help those who we pass, passing along the mercy that we live with.

What do you say,  Should we start off our Monday morning, by remembering to GO and DO likewise?
