An Honest Thought on Weakness

I have thought lately about some of Jesus’ last words on this Earth.  During that time he provided his followers a vision and a directive.

18-20 Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.  Matthew 28:18-20 The Message (MSG)

As I think about that, I realize I do a whole lot of going out, but I wonder how much training, or disciple making I do.  This is quite a paradox actually, since I think I really believe that this message is life changing, yet I find myself too reserved to mention this idea to people who have no clue about how it can free your life.  It’s even more confusing when I think I reserved or fearful when I have the God of the Universe on my side.

I am trying to figure out how to decapitate that fear and move forward. It’s a weakness that bugs me more than my inability to sing, and today is a great opportunity to work on that.

How about you – is there something holding you back?  He is with you, you know.

Finishing…

Oh man! I can’t believe I missed it! Yesterday was November 1, 2011. Or 11/1/11. ( for the European readers that’s 1/11/11). They called it Binary day and that is just chock full of date and number fun! But yeah, next week is even better because next Friday is 11/11/11!!!!! Sweeeeet!  I can’t wait until 11:11 on 11/11/11!!!

Oh and I found something neat that is happening that weekend- the 12 and 13. It’s called finish weekend. A group of people in Michigan are getting together for the weekend to finish projects that they have started but have not quite completed. I think that’s a pretty cool idea. I am sure most of can join them in Michigan, but you can extend the idea into your home or community or self !

And just to prove my point, I think I will take a verse completely out of context about the need to finish work:

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ Luke 14 NIV

Seriously though, what Jesus says there is correct. We have lots of things that we get started and not completely finish.  That leads me to two thoughts for today.  First, take advantage of this little ‘finish weekend’ idea. Find a project that is lingering around and knock it out that weekend.  You’ll feel great about yourself!

Secondly, lets look at what Jesus was really driving two in Luke where he mentioned the incomplete tower

33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. Luke 14 NIV

Hm.  He says,’ you have got to give up yourself if you are following me!’.  Hearing that, it maybe that we should also use next week to be finished with something?
